The Power of Stillness: Why Your Time (and Your Money) is Moving Too Damn Much

September 08, 2026•5 min read

I am just coming off the July 4th holiday weekend, and as we hit Monday, the standard, polite conversation always rolls around: “Hey, how was your weekend? Do anything fun?”

When a few people asked me that today, my answer was simple: I did absolutely nothing. I walked into my house on Friday night, and I promise you I did not set foot outside until Monday morning. I slept. I ate. I read. I slept some more. To some people, that sounds incredibly boring. They feel like a long weekend is a canvas that must be aggressively filled with plans, trips, and consumption.

But I sat there reflecting on where I used to be: working 60-hour weeks to clear $14,000 a year. Back then, I didn't have the luxury to just sit. I didn't have the time to let my body rest or let my thoughts be still.

For years, I prayed for moments where I could earn more and work less. Now, I am living the answer to my prayers. I am working less than I ever have while making more than I ever have.

But here is the revelation most people aren't ready for: You think that if someone handed you an abundance of time, you would automatically slow down. But it doesn't work that way. Slowing down is a habit you have to build actively.

The Stress Test: When Life Lives

If you are always on "go," you have zero capacity for what life brings your way.

On Sunday night, life did what life does. I discovered an actual leak coming from my roof right into my bedroom. In my past life, this would have triggered a spiral of panic. It would have ruined my week, induced the "Monday Scaries," and completely derailed my workflow.

But because I had spent the weekend resting, and because I intentionally left my Monday schedule wide open—except for one quick morning meeting—I had the mental and physical capacity to handle it. By 4:00 PM on Monday, I already had two contractors drop by to give me quotes. My workflow wasn't disrupted. My peace wasn't stolen.

Could I have crammed my Monday schedule with more client calls or project tasks? Sure. But I chose not to.

We’ve all heard the cliché phrase, “Busy is not productive.” But I want to take it a step further: Busy is not productive, and productive is not always required. There is an unshakeable power in stillness. And if you want to know why you are struggling to build a next-level life, you have to look at how the way you manage your time mirrors the exact way you manage your money.

Your Money is Too Busy

The same "always on go" habit you bring to your calendar is the habit you are bringing to your bank account.

Your money is simply too busy. It’s always moving. It’s always spending. It’s always flying out of your account the second it hits. It is never allowed to just sit still, stay locked up, and comfortably grow.

In her book The Power of Receiving, Amanda Owen talks about the distinct difference between active and passive energy. True receiving requires a level of passive, open capacity.

You say you want passive streams of income. You say you want your money to make babies, grandbabies, and great-grandbabies through compound interest. But you refuse to put your money into passive vehicles where it is required to just sit there.

  • You look at your investment account every five minutes.

  • You move money around constantly because you’re anxious.

  • You clear out your savings the second a consumption goal pops up.

It takes an immense amount of discipline, patience, and heavy unlearning to let things be. If you cannot master the habit of stillness with your time, you will never master the habit of stillness with your money. To be a true financial steward, you have to stop moving so damn much.

A Direct Audit: Are You Allowing for Stillness?

To gauge whether you are actually building the capacity to receive the life and wealth you pray for, take five minutes to sit with these four reflection questions:

  • The Calendar Audit: Look at your upcoming week. Have you left at least one multi-hour block completely blank? If your automatic reaction to an empty block is to fill it with work out of guilt, what story are you telling yourself about your worth being tied to your busyness?

  • The "Nothingness" Test: Can you sit in a room for 30 minutes without your phone, a television, a book, or a task, and feel completely at peace? If stillness feels like anxiety, you haven't built the habit of rest yet.

  • The Financial Velocity Check: How long does a dollar actually sit undisturbed in your ecosystem before it is spent, moved, or allocated to a bill? Is your money constantly running a marathon because you haven't built a designated parking space for it?

  • The Passive Vehicle Realism: Are you actively funding accounts (like retirement, index funds, or long-term high-yield accounts) that require you to do absolutely nothing for the next ten years? Or is your investment strategy entirely dependent on you constantly adjusting, trading, and interfering?

Every single thing you intentionally pause creates space for something better to arrive. Stop glorifying the grind, hand your money over to systems that allow it to rest, step back, and let stillness do the heavy lifting for you.
